Edition 256
Monday, 6th April 2026

Last week’s meeting was quite well attended, with members eager to listen to  our two speakers. Our speakers were John Humphrey from Bluff Road Physiotherapy and Will Cohen from North Road Physiotherapy. They mostly talked about ageing and fitness and just like last week there were lots of questions.
We have received an invitation, via Jo, from the International Dance Syllabus to attend their production of The Book of Musicals, at South Oakleigh College in The Christine Strachan Theatre. There are three performances running from April 17th to 19th, 2026 at a cost of $25 per ticket. There is a link in the bulletin to further information.
Last Tuesday in March was the Kingston  Service Clubs Network meeting. These meetings are for all service clubs in the City of Kingston, or close by and are to inform us of council programs and programs and activities that the other service clubs are involved with. The clubs are not just Rotary, but include Lions and Kiwanis.
Kingston has supplied information about sessions organised by the council for residents which I will arrange to be emailed to our members. I know that most of us do not live within the City of Kingston, however your own council may also have similar programs available, home energy usage is covers multiple councils.
The Rotary Club of Beaumaris is hosting a community event on the 26th April at Green Point park in Brighton. The event is called Bayside Doggy Day, entrance is 2$ per person and this includes dogs.
This week our meeting will not be at Cilantro as they are closed due to school holidays. This weeks meeting will be at Beau’s in Centre Road.

Club President, 2025-26,
Grant Perry

Rebuilding futures, one tractor at a time
A Rotary-led workshop in Newcastle is transforming disengaged students through hands-on restoration projects, proving that with practical learning, mentorship and belief, young people can find confidence, purpose and a clear path to the future.
What began as a conversation in Newcastle, NSW, has grown into a powerful example of how a Rotary-led initiative can transform lives through practical learning, mentorship and community belief.

As the science advances, Rotary members join the quest to find malaria vaccines

By Photography by

At first it just seemed like a bad flu.

The illness struck Danielle Stanisic while she was in New York for a research gig, her first time living away from home in Australia. It was her lab mates, though, who grew alarmed and insisted she get tested. It turned out Stanisic, who had traveled to Papua New Guinea six months earlier, had malaria.

Club Meeting April 1 2026
Julie chaired this morning's meeting in her usual efficient manner. Guests included Daniela, Rajan, and Gary.  Ron almost fooled everyone when he mentioned that during a recent Rotary cluster group meeting the hierarchy of Rotary had decided to merge clubs, and that BMC was to merge with Mordialloc!  - It was April Fools Day afterall.

With dams, rainwater collection, and purification systems, Rotary and Rotaract clubs help people access clean water
By Etelka Lehoczky

Access to clean water and sanitation can determine whether a child gets an education. That’s what Rotaract club members in the Ashanti region of Ghana learned when they explored ways to improve schools in their area.

The schools the club members visited faced water shortages and relied on contaminated water, resulting in high levels of diarrhea, dysentery, and other illnesses. There were no modern toilets, and girls didn’t have private spaces for menstrual hygiene. The lack of water affected every aspect of the students’ lives. The wide-ranging impact of water access is highlighted on the United Nations’ World Water Day, observed on 22 March.

The RYLA effect
Taken from RDU HERE

A week-long RYLA retreat in Sydney was the catalyst that sparked Jordan O’Reilly’s resolve to transform disability support across Australia.

Early in 2012, Jordan O’Reilly arrived at Narrabeen on Sydney’s Northern Beaches for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), an intensive week-long program.

At the time, he was working on an idea for a new charity to support young Australians with a disability. His inspiration was his brother, Shane, who is 18 months younger and has cerebral palsy.

Imagination at the intersection of science and nature
Taken from RDU HERE

Jayathi and Jayath Jaiganesh’s journey into storytelling and STEM did not begin with a grand plan or a push toward achievement. Instead, it grew quietly from curiosity – about nature, technology and how the world works.

Words: Sarah Atkins. President, No Borders Rotaract.

Jayathi and Jayath are two teenagers who seem endlessly absorbed in learning more about the world. Based in Pōneke Wellington, NZ, they have a growing list of accomplishments between them: tennis championships, writing competition wins, football and cricket victories.

Rotary Peace Fellow employs AI for a better world
Taken from RI website HERE  By

During her Rotary Peace Fellowship, Branka Panic worked as a short-term consultant at the World Bank, joining a team that was building a model to predict the probability of famine.

The benefits of such a tool were obvious: “If a certain area will be in need of food in six months, in 12 months, we can prepare humanitarian aid more efficiently,” Panic says.

But unintended consequences of making that information available also became clear. “Our intention was to make humanitarian agencies ready,” Panic says. “But what if, by providing this signal as an open source, we were actually informing the government or any warring party out there to intentionally attack this population because they see there is a vulnerability?”

The exercise illustrated both the power and the danger of using such technologies. It surfaced ethical questions to be mindful of and the sensitivities of parsing data and sharing it widely.

Club Fellowship Dinner March 19 2026
A group of 20 or so club members and partners attended the evening at Cilantro on Thursday night 19/3.   We had a lovely and delicious dinner prepared by a team of students completing their Certificate IV cookery and hospitality course.  We were advised the students designed the menu which provided tastings of a number of dishes for each course - and their selection and execution was very well received by everyone and did not disappoint.

Due to our numbers we did not have the restaurant entirely to ourselves, with members of the general public joining in to fill the room.  Thus we had to forego the normal meeting formalities and, unfortunately, the guest speaker segment was also shelved for a future time.  In all, everyone had a very enjoyable and relaxing evening and provided a great opportunity to socialise and catch up.

Note from the Editor re Images and Events
A point regarding the submission of images for the Bulletin and Website: Members are reminded that images have to meet a minimum size requirement, as has been specified for some time in the section at the bottom of this Bulletin. 820 pixels is the minimum size required with larger being better as this allows for cropping. The submission of images via MMS is NOT preferred as they are too small and of inferior quality. Email or Whatsapp is far superior.
Would any member like to take responsibility for the updating of the Club's Event Calendar? I have created a page of instructions here so it is very easy to take over.
Thank you, Ian Ballantine
