Edition 260
Monday, 27th April 2026

Last Wednesday we had a second installment about the Boyd family, these were an eminent family of artists in SE suburbs of Melbourne at the turn of the Twentieth Century. The presentation was by Colin Smith, who gave the first presentation in October last year. This time Colin mostly spoke about the parents and Penleigh Boyd, as well as covering the Boyd’s during the First World War during their time in the army in France.
On Wednesday afternoon I attended the memorial service for John Mason. There were many, many people present, so many that the church could not accommodate all who attended and an overflow room was set up, as well people could view the service on-line. The numbers of attendees was an indication of the esteem to which John was held by members of the various organisations in which he was involved. Amongst the attendees were many past members of the club, partners and members of the the wider Rotary family.
The service covered John’s life, as told by family and friends. I knew John as a Rotarian, but he was much more than that, a sailor of small craft, from the time when he was small. John was heavily involved in education, the building industry and the church where the service was held, not just as a member, but as an active participant. It was very evident from all who spoke that John  contributed much more to the community than he took out. Story HERE.
During this Rotary year it had been a wish of our club to present John with another Paul Harris Fellow (PHF), however his declining health made meeting attendance pretty much impossible. This was was addressed at the service by a posthumous award bestowed by PDG Ian Ballantine on behalf of the club and Rotary International.
This week our speaker is Rotarian Murray Wilson who is a Victorian Bail Justice. Murray is a member of the Rotary Club of Rowville-Lysterfield and is currently District Governor Nominee for District 9815, that is he will be our District Governor for the year 2027-28. Murray will be talking about the new bail laws.

Changing lives in rural Cambodia
Taken from Rotary Down Under HERE

Across rural Cambodia, Rotary clubs and community partners are delivering lasting change by combining clean water, safe housing and human connection to transform lives one village at a time.

In the rural and remote provinces of Cambodia, where access to clean water, safe sanitation and secure housing can never be taken for granted, Rotary is once again proving the power of service in action. A dedicated RAWCS project led by the Rotary Club of East Maitland, NSW, has been quietly but profoundly changing lives, one family, one village, one connection at a time. This year, the impact has grown further, with the Rotary Club of Morisset, NSW, joining the project and the Rotary Club of Maitland Sunrise, NSW, providing valued support.

Springvale City Rotary Club Fundraiser
Members Linda O'Brien, Helen Parker and myself attended the annual End Polio fundraiser last Thursday evening at the Saigon Rex Restaurant in Springvale.
We were accompanied by Rotarian PDG Bob Richards from the Sandringham RC.
As usual, it was a most colourful affair very well attended by Rotarians, friends of Rotary and amny local dignitaries.
Springvale City is certainly is a club that is well connected to its community.
They raised, somewhere of the order of $25,000 on the and associated fundraising efforts.
It would be terrific if perhaps more of our members might consider attending next year.

Progress report: Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia
Taken from RI HERE
Rotary and partners scale up by going local, deploying health workers to confront malaria and more
When the Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia program began five years ago, Rotarian Bill Feldt offered a forecast of what success would look like in 2026:
“I would hope we’d see a dramatic reduction in malaria incidence,” he told Rotary magazine in 2021. “We’d want to see a self-sustaining health system that is fully utilizing community health workers, where they are diagnosing 60 to 70 percent of whatever small number of cases of malaria there are. ... We’ll see that turnover for community health workers is low ... They will represent the last kilometer of a health system that’s very successful.”

Fellowship Dinner at Joe's
A total of 17 members, partners and guests got together for a dinner at Joes Pasta and Pizza in Mentone on the evening of Thursday April 16, 2026.
Guests included Bob Richards from Sandringham RC.
A great evening was had by all and I'm sure many of us who hadn't been to Joes before, will be returning.
The meal was just great, featuring home made pasta and a great range of sauces. I'm told the pizza was great as well. Priced very competitively, including the wines along with an amazing decor I thoroughly recommend this restaurant in Beach Road, Mentone.

Note from the Editor re Images and Events
A point regarding the submission of images for the Bulletin and Website: Members are reminded that images have to meet a minimum size requirement, as has been specified for some time in the section at the bottom of this Bulletin. 820 pixels is the minimum size required with larger being better as this allows for cropping. The submission of images via MMS is NOT preferred as they are too small and of inferior quality. Email or Whatsapp is far superior.
Would any member like to take responsibility for the updating of the Club's Event Calendar? I have created a page of instructions here so it is very easy to take over.
Thank you, Ian Ballantine
