Message from our President

“Serve to Change Lives”

Some club members may remember in May last year Ahmed Kelly visited our club via zoom and provided an insight into the life of an Olympic athlete. On Saturday last Ahmed’s dreams came to fruition winning a silver medal in the men’s 150 individual swimming medley at the Tokyo games.
So, with an extended family interest here, I have been glued to the T.V. since Paralympics commenced and feeling quite waterlogged from all the swimming events watched.
This has set me thinking, despite their significant disabilities, this group has chosen to live life to the fullest, never giving in to the complexities of their bodies. They are out in the public arena showing us all that disabilities are not limiting to living.
The one word that identifies all to me is “RESILIENCE”, they all display the qualities of Resilience.

This has made me research the word “resilence”. The dictionary suggests it is a capacity to recover quickly from difficulties, toughness, an elasticity.
Taking this one step further are the 5 pillars to being resilient
  • Self-awareness
  • Relationships
  • Mindfulness
  • Self Care
  • Purpose
Then taking this one step further again are the techniques that we need to build resilience
  • Connection to others
  • Communication
  • Be flexible
  • Manage strong feelings
  • Set realistic plans and actions
  • See the big picture
  • The use of humor in life

Okay now, most are probably asking where is she going with this. Well to bring it back to our club let me explain. A successful athlete never manages on their own. You will constantly hear Ash Barty referring to her team, never uses the word “ I “ hence her amazing tennis success. Ahmed’s story is no different.
So, I believe a successful club will be one that works in unison as a team, complementing each other's skills, engaging and communicating often, and maintaining the vision of the bigger picture.

It is very frustrating belonging to a service club in lockdown, however, I want to acknowledge and thank the service teams who are communicating, meeting regularly, setting plans and actions in place for when we can be out and about again.
Till then to boost our resilience we need to stay in open communication and connected.
Regards and all the best,
Helen Nodrum

Rotary's Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

We believe that exemplifying and embracing diversity,  equity, and inclusion (DEI) should be a part of everything we do at Rotary.

To ensure we live up to that ideal, the Board of Directors and our DEI Taskforce acted to strengthen the DEI statement originally adopted in 2019.  The result is in a new commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion:
