Message from our President

“Serve to Change Lives”
Great meeting last week with our numbers in excess of 30 back home at Cilantro. The presentation to Calvary Healthcare (Bethlehem) for funding of much-needed equipment was a great incentive for us to keep going and was more than appreciated by the team at Calvary Healthcare. A reminder we need to market through our breakfast meetings the funding we provide throughout our community and bring organisations back to our club meetings for these presentations.
Our Applied Learning Awards sponsorship this year was inclusive of awards for small businesses in the area that support work experience for students in secondary colleges.
Margaret Lucas and I responded to an invitation to attend Westall Secondary College in Clarinda on Thursday last to first present the business awards but also to participate in a “speed Careers” day for the Year 8, 9, and 10 students. So, the outcome for us is that 200 secondary school students and some teachers now know about Rotary. (See full report)
Thanks also to Ian Ballantine who attended to take the photographs.
Following is a list of dates for our diaries in early 2022.
•    19th January, 1045am- 6 pm R.Y.L.A. camp an invitation for Rotarians to attend on just this one day and participate in the day's program. The camp is held at Rawson Village Camp, Rawson (Gippsland). The cost is $28.00 for lunch. I have registered for this and would love other members to join me on the day- will send more information to those interested in making the trip.
•    5th February, Saturday, mid-morning set up to 8 pm finish – Beachside Parkdale Gift event. We will be assisting at this event with setting up, marshaling duties, food truck cooking - sausage sizzle and egg and bacon rolls. Our club will be sponsoring two races at this event, the men’s and women’s relay races ($500 each race). A roster of members will be needed to assist on the day.
•    27th February, Dandenong Storm Recovery Festival. Les Marton and David Cugley the AG’s for our cluster have organised us for this event and we will work as a cluster group. Our cluster is responsible for traffic control within the event reserve. Our roster duty is 0830 – 1030. We need Rotarians from the flat lands as we are described just to be there on the day and show our support to all involved and of course to fill our roster time.
•    Corryong Scout Hall recovery project is tentatively booked for the long weekend in March. Details are yet to be finalised but plan on coming up Friday and staying through to Monday/Tuesday if at all possible. Plenty of opportunities this weekend for fellowship.
•    Watch this space – the allocation for “clean up Australia day” is the first weekend in March – planning is just beginning for our cluster clubs “clean up Karkarook Park” using much the same format as we did last year.
•    Rotary district 9810 conference – 25th and 26th March – wonderful program in place, this is an event that is not to be missed – registrations are open.
The club’s end of year celebrations was held on Saturday last.
Massive thanks to Ron and Marilyn Brownlees for hosting the event at their lovely home.
Even larger thanks to Linda O’Brien, capably assisted by Margaret Mason for the organisation, catering, and just general running of the afternoon. Wonderful to have the opportunity to just get together and chat.
Our club breaks up this week, 15th December for a well-earned holiday break, but don’t forget the market never rests so keep an eye out for your rostered day.
Breakfast meetings at Cilantro will resume on 19th January 2022.
As we close off this challenging year of 2021, may I wish all members, their families, and friends a wonderful Christmas and Happy Chanukah.
May this season of love, joy, and happiness remain with each of us throughout the new year and beyond.

With every best wish
Helen Nodrum

SafePL8 November 2, 2021
Our club was happy to accept an invitation from Glen Eira Police to assist in their “Safe Plate Day” held on Saturday last 20th November at the Glen Eira Town Hall carpark area.
We partnered with other community groups, State Emergency Service (SES), fire brigade, and neighborhood watch, not to mention our local law officers. The SES truck, a fire brigade truck, and the very impressive police pursuit vehicles were there on the day – a definite drawcard for the families and children to see over these impressive vehicles. Last but not least thankfully “the coffee cart”.
