Message from our President - Ron's Ramblings

This weeks speaker will be Kylie Stanley from the Highland Foundation and we will be presenting a cheque to Kylie as a result of the fantastic fundraising efforts of Faye Weeks and her team in conducting the ‘High Tea’ at the Healey last month. There will also be a contribution from the International committee included. Unfortunately Faye may not be with us on Wednesday but I hear via the grapevine she is recovering well from her surgery.
Our final evening meeting for the year was certainly a good one. Great food by the Cordon Bleu team and an entertaining and interesting guest speaker. Well done Glenda on a good choice. If you have any interesting speakers you would like to hear next year (not necessarily Rotary related) please give Glenda call. As you know Glenda and Warren are in the Philippines at the moment and I have sent them a text re the possible impact of the earthquake but I have not heard back yet.
Last week Linda and I delivered the clubs annual gift of Christmas Cakes and Mince Pies to Southern family Life, the Holland Foundation, Glen Eira Community Support, and the Salvos. Thanks to Linda for putting this program together and helping with delivery.
Next week will be our last meeting for the year and it will be a fellowship breakfast and partners are welcome, but please book with Sam or myself if bringing a guest.
We have a good representation at next years District conference, but if you have not booked yet do so soon.
Our first meeting for 2024 is planned for January 17th at The Deck in Bay Street Brighton.

Yours in Rotary  ‘Create Hope in The World.’
President Ron

Special Evening Meeting November 29 2023
This week we enjoyed a very special evening with guest speaker, author Laraine Stephens.
We had a number of guests attend on the evening and all appeared to have enjoyed the night.
Laraine had worked as a teacher-librarian and Head of Library before she became a writer of historical crime fiction. Her first novel in the Reggie da Costa Mysteries, was The Death Mask Murders (2021) followed by Deadly Intent (2022) and then A Deadly Game in 2023. Laraine sets her Reggie da Costa Mysteries in Melbourne, early 20th century, in the aftermath of the Great war and during the heady days of 1920's, when gangs, sly grog and gambling dens inhabited the back streets of Melbourne.
Laraine happily signed copies of her books at the end of the evening.
Our thanks to Tony and the staff at Holmsglen for making our evening so special.

Note from the Editor re Images and Events
A point regarding the submission of images for the Bulletin and Website: Members are reminded that images have to meet a minimum size requirement, as has been specified for some time in the section at the bottom of this Bulletin. 820 pixels is the minimum size required with larger being better as this allows for cropping. The submission of images via MMS is NOT preferred as they are too small and of inferior quality. Email or Whatsapp is preferred.
Would any member like to take responsibility for the updating of the Club's Event Calendar? I have created a page of instructions here so it is very easy to take over.
Thank you, Ian Ballantine
