Message from our President
Well, here we go again – Lockdown 5.0. A snap lockdown they say but do not hold your breath the last circuit breaker of 7 days lasted three weeks and the spread of this raging virus just gets faster each time.
Cilantro is now unavailable due to this lockdown and whilst we considered endeavouring to meet back at Virginia Park for just this one week the timing is too tight to accommodate us on the Wednesday morning, particularly if the lockdown does not end.
…BACK TO A ZOOM MEETING FOR THIS WEEK.
Following our board meeting last week, the service team chairperson’s will now gather their teams and start planning for this rotary year. I am looking forward to working with each team to bring about our projects and partnership outcomes.
The Kingston A cluster for this year has been expanded to include Springvale City, Noble Park Dingley, Chelsea, Mordialloc, Moorabbin and ourselves.
A huge vote of thanks to Ian Ballantine for the work he put into getting our club’s first hybrid meeting up and running. It was not as simple as it looked and there was quite a bit of planning and thought required to pull it off. Wonderful to provide our members who cannot get to Cilantro the opportunity of attending meetings.
The youth committee have got off to a flying start this year with regards Rotary youth programs. We are pleased to sponsor Tilde Verhoeven from Mentone Girls Secondary college to National Youth Science forum and we are presently interviewing a candidate for RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly)
Tim Moran continues to do some great work in the background as our representative on the district committee looking at establishing a Rotaract club in our area. Whilst this will not be achieved overnight, I believe the committee’s action plan will yield success down the track.
Along with Terry Kane, Linda O’Brien and Peter Nolan I had the honour of being invited to Change over night for Rotary Club of South Davao in the Philippines. Our donation through Terry’s “share a dream” organisation was acknowledged during the ceremony and I was given the pleasure of responding on behalf of our club
As you will have guessed a Virtual event – but nonetheless a most impressive night
(see report further down the bulletin).
Keep in touch with each other and stay safe
Regards and all the best,
Helen Nodrum

Over the years, I caught glimpses of Shekhar Mehta when he came to One Rotary Center in Evanston, Illinois, for Board of Directors meetings. I met him formally during one of the days of back-to-back meetings with various staff members that every incoming Rotary president participates in. During the session I attended, he was the most relaxed person in the room, despite being the only one suffering from jet lag. He was alert, patient, and asked perceptive questions — not surprising for someone as successful as he is in his professional and philanthropic life. I kept thinking that he was assessing each of us to see how we could be recruited to help him achieve his dreams for Rotary.
