Message from our President
From the Desk of President Margaret
I am allocating my column this week to some reflection and self-introspection and will welcome comments and feedback.
Brad Howard, a former Rotary International Director in the US and Canada, once said that “Rotary has been described as the greatest non-profit, non-religious, non-governmental organisation in the history of the world.” It is apparent that the Rotary membership is declining and we confront this on our own doorstep with the imminent amalgamation of our District 9810 with District 9820 due to declining membership.
An article in the Forbes magazine discussed why large companies fail to keep their best talent. We can draw some parallels with this to the declining Rotary membership in general and perhaps to our club in particular. One reason given is lack of open-mindedness. Members want to feel valued and new suggestions can only improve what we do and achieve our goals.
Another reason is having tasks and projects that members can participate in and feel appreciated. Team dynamics is also very important. Members need to feel that they get along with each other and enjoy each others company and look forward to attending meetings and fellowship functions.
One other reason worth mentioning is trust and shifting priorities. We cannot tell members what to do and how to participate. All members have different needs and priorities at various times in their lives and we need to be cognisant of this.
I hope these words are food for thought and reflection and that they will lead to much discussion and action within our club.
I personally will welcome feed back and input.
Thanks everyone
With every best wishes
President Margaret Mason

The Rotary Foundation and Rotary clubs around the world have hurried to provide funds, supplies, and services to Ukrainians displaced by the war.
The Rotary Foundation has raised more than $15 million in contributions that are already helping provide people in Ukraine with essential items such as water, food, shelter, medicine, and clothing. Donations made to the Disaster Response Fund after 30 April will be available to all communities around the world that need assistance recovering from disasters.
After discovering new perspectives and being inspired by new ideas at the 2022 Rotary International Convention, attendees and virtual participants are looking ahead to next year's gathering in Melbourne, the sparkling second city of Australia.
