Dinner options replaced the spit roast and was a most welcome replacement.

World Polio Day October 24
Every year, the Rotary community mobilizes for World Polio Day to raise awareness about global efforts to end polio for good. If we stay committed, we can make polio the second human disease ever to be eradicated.

World Polio Day (24 October) was established by Rotary International to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis. Use of this inactivated poliovirus vaccine and subsequent widespread use of the oral poliovirus vaccine developed by Albert Sabin led to establishment of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988. Since then, GPEI has reduced polio worldwide by 99 percent.
World Polio Day is an annual observance when members of Rotary International, along with public health advocates and individuals committed to a polio-free world, convene to commemorate their accomplishments in the global campaign against polio. This day also provides a platform for deliberation on the requisite measures to permanently eliminate polio from the face of the Earth.

Picturing polio pioneer Dorothy Horstmann

For years, she stood in the shadow of great men like Salk and Sabin. Now she’s ready for her close-up.
by Geoffrey Johnson

“For one often catches a glimpse of them in the lives of
the great, whisking away into the background, concealing,
I sometimes think, a wink, a laugh, perhaps a tear.”
—Virginia Woolf

In the spring of 1944, even as a world war raged in Europe and Asia, a silent and unseen assailant crept into North Carolina’s Catawba County. Its first reported victim was a 17-month-old blond girl from Hickory named Linda Kiser. After falling ill in early June, the girl had been rushed to the hospital in nearby Charlotte by the county’s public health nurse.

Interplast in Samoa
This story was taken from the Interplast website dated March 9, 2026
Last year, you may have read about Dr Ben Norris and his fundraising efforts to get a volunteer surgical team to Samoa. Thanks to the support of his generous network of patients, friends, colleagues, and incredible supporters like you, a volunteer Interplast team has returned from a successful surgical program in Apia, Samoa, delivering critical care to many children and adults.
Dr Ben Norris and his fellow volunteers, reconstructive surgeon Associate Professor Damian Marucci, nurse Norma Schwalger, anaesthetist Dr Alan Goodey, theatre nurse M-J Laing, hand therapist Katie Anjou, and anaesthetic nurse Caz McLoughlin, have been visiting Samoa to provide surgeries, post-operative care, and training for local partners and clinicians.

The women who changed Rotary
Taken from RDU HERE
PICTURED: Sylvia Whitlock paved the way for women in Rotary when she became the first female Rotary club president in 1987.

Once excluded from membership, women are now leading Rotary at every level, reshaping the organisation through service, courage and a commitment to opening doors for the next generation.

Words Juliet Potter. PR, Media & Communications Manager.

For almost 80 years, women could support Rotary. They organised fundraisers, volunteered behind the scenes and championed community causes, but they couldn’t become members.

Note from the Editor re Images and Events
A point regarding the submission of images for the Bulletin and Website: Members are reminded that images have to meet a minimum size requirement, as has been specified for some time in the section at the bottom of this Bulletin. 820 pixels is the minimum size required with larger being better as this allows for cropping. The submission of images via MMS is NOT preferred as they are too small and of inferior quality. Email or Whatsapp is far superior.
Would any member like to take responsibility for the updating of the Club's Event Calendar? I have created a page of instructions here so it is very easy to take over.
Thank you, Ian Ballantine
