Message from our President
“Serve to Change Lives”
NO CLUB MEETING THIS WEEK ON THE WEDNESDAY – REPLACED BY OUR PRE-CONFERENCE CLUB DINNER ON FRIDAY 25TH MARCH AT THE MARINE HOTEL. Details here.
Thank you to club members and partners/friends for the support of our club dinner this Friday evening. We have 44 registered and are looking forward to a great time together, along with the two conference on-line speakers, Dr. Norman Swann and Professor Veena Sahajwalla.
Looking forward to our face-to-face District conference and dinner on Saturday 26th March.
Perhaps we will bring back to the club loads of ideas for projects and activities.
As individual Rotary clubs we can sometimes become consumed with our own internal work and boundaries and forget that we belong to a much wider network of like-minded people and projects. With this in mind I want to congratulate this club for pushing through that mindset and recently creating the following partnerships and outcomes.
1. Within our cluster along with RC Moorabbin and RC Mordialloc we now have corporate or organisational membership with “Friends of Karkarook Park”. This will enable our three clubs to work more closely with each other and address Rotary’s seventh arm of service being Environment and Sustainability.
2. We have supported RC MASH, lift the lid on mental health walk event which occurred on Sunday last at Gardiner’s Creek, Burwood. I attended on our club’s behalf. Along with a good walk, I had a fabulous day networking and meeting Rotarians from other clubs. Our Sergeant’s fines from the previous club meeting were donated to that event and I was happy to hand over $72 to the organisers, our members having dug deep to support RC MASH. Details here.
3. We are by the way one of the greatest supporters of RC MASH project, with our mince pies and Christmas cakes we order through their club each year.
4. We have donated to RC Whittlesea, a smaller Rotary Club in district 9790, a spare money spinner that our club has had in storage for many years. I was so proud when the board members readily agreed to donate that spinner rather than charge or request a donation for it. RC Whittlesea have sent back to us this photo of club members and the spinner with their thanks. It has been put to good use at two separate club events in the last month.
Congratulations to our club members who conducted the Rotary stall at last Sunday’s market, over $300 was raised through the sale of donated items. This money will be added to the Queensland/NSW flood victim’s appeal. Well done to organisers Sue L. and Glenda S., along with Faye and Samantha and the men on the team Ken Oakes, Peter Loeliger and Grant Perry.
Lastly, let’s not forget we have a special meeting coming up on Wednesday 6th April.
We are meeting with the Inner Wheel club at their venue, Woodlands Golf Club. This will be an evening meeting, start time 6pm for 6.30pm. Very special guest speaker is Matt Finnis, CEO St. Kilda Football club. Football team colours are encouraged on the night.
Cost is $45.00 per head, with drinks at bar prices. I will need final numbers and payment at our meeting on the 30th March please everyone. Details here.
Stay safe and healthy everyone.
Warm regards
President Helen Nodrum
A big reminder that THERE WILL BE NO MEETING ON WEDNESDAY THIS WEEK
It is replaced by evening at the Marine Hotel for the Conference opening. Details here
The crisis in Ukraine is having devastating consequences on civilians as families flee their homes. According to the United Nations, more than 3 million people, most of them women and children, have sought refuge in neighboring countries and across Europe, while about 1 million more people have been displaced within Ukraine.
This week is Mental Health Week and in recognition members were invited to wear a hat to today’s meeting - everyone did with a variety of hats, caps and fascinators in different shapes and colours.
Today’s chairperson was Peter O’Brien, who looked resplendent in “a take on Lawrence of Arabia” wearing the keffiyeh headdress. Can I ask everyone - is there a likeness? Is this Peter O’Brien in a former life??
Access to Foundation grants will help Rotaractors broaden their impact
In 2018, Rotary International President Barry Rassin was visiting Turkey for a district meeting. His hosts took him around to see some projects — but to his surprise, they weren’t Rotary club projects. They were projects of Rotaract clubs.
The Rotary Foundation creates channel for direct humanitarian support in Ukraine region - from the RI website here
In response to the deepening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, The Rotary Foundation has created an official channel for Rotary members around the world to contribute funds to support the relief efforts underway by Rotary districts and has designated its Disaster Response Fund as the main avenue for contributions.
