Board Motion Requiring Members' Approval

The following motion was moved on behalf of the International Committee and approved by the Club's Board at the Board Meeting held on Monday, September 7, 2026:

Motion

That the Club make a donation of $10,000 to Interplast. Interplast works across the Asia Pacific region to improve access to safe, timely, and appropriate surgical, medical, and rehabilitation services. Our programs focus on building local capacity through training, mentoring, and strengthening health systems so that communities can access care that transforms lives. More info HERE.

As this amount is $5,000 or more, it will require the approval of Club members. This motion will be put to members at the normal Club meeting to be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

Monday, 14th September 2026

Last Wednesday Jules Gaddie spoke about Mohammed Ali. The speech was absolutely enthralling and Jules did a fortune of research on the subject. Thank you Jules.
This Wednesday morning Greg O’Shea member of RCBMC will be speaking on “from chef to Franchisee”. Greg owns Quest Hotel and apartments in Geelong.
Happy RCBMC anniversary to Ian Ballantine (29 years on 16th Sept), Terry Kane (13 years on 18th Sept), Linda O’Brien (30 years 18th Sept) and Geoff Gartly (25 years on 19th Sept).
Happy birthday to Jo Impey for the 17Th Sept .
We have settled in at Gilberts. Thank you Linda for changing the menu as from this Wednesday. Note that in future the cost will be $28 pp regardless even if members only want coffee. As from 1st October the cost will be $30 but it has been legislated that the surcharge on credit cards will fall away.

Sold about 5 stalls on the morning.
Good solid pedestrian traffic. No issues other than non arrival of Moorabbin for early shift.

October is Mental Health Month – “Lift the Lid - Hat Day”

A focus on mental health research is a focus for my District Governor year, and in preparation for this month we are encouraging all Rotary Clubs and Rotaract Clubs across District 9815 to host a Lift the Lid - Hat Day at your club in October, in support of Australian Rotary Health’s vital mental health and general health initiatives.

Membership has changed. So must we.

When people outside of Rotary ask about my 30-plus-year journey in Rotary – starting as an enthusiastic Interactor in high school, joining a Rotary club, being encouraged to become a club president, serving as district governor, and now in the role of Rotary International director – they often ask about my passion and what keeps me in Rotary.

When I look back, my truest Rotary memories are not defined by titles, but by moments of profound human connection. My passion is rooted in the quiet, life-changing instances of service.

Tim stood up to be our Chair this morning. There were no guests.

Member Jules Gaddie was our guest speaker, at late notice, as our planned guest speaker(s) were unable to attend.
President Neville reported on the Board meeting held on Monday evening. The major motion passed was the Club's proposed donation to Interplast. He reminded members that approval from the membership will be sought at the meeting on the 23rd September.

Jules gave a very interesting address on Cassius Clay, later know of course as Muhammad Ali.

Rosters were sorted and announcements made. In particular members were reminded of two major events approaching - Rio Carnival Ball (details HERE) for the Share a Dream Organisation and the Holland Foundation Ball (details HERE) .

The Nobel laureate challenges Rotary members to make their own daring leaps

In the fall of 2017, during her first weeks as a student at Oxford University, Malala Yousafzai snuck out of her dormitory in the middle of the night and climbed to the top of a campus bell tower, a feat that required eluding detection, teetering on rooftops and window ledges, and making death-defying leaps.

“People had been watching me my entire life, making sure I followed the rules, obeyed orders, stuck to the script,” Yousafzai explains in her latest memoir, Finding My Way. “Since arriving at college, I felt high on independence. Every choice, even the bad ones, belonged to me.”

Rotary Peace Fellow Miriam Mylvaganam’s journey across continents and crisis zones has become a powerful exploration of refugee self-reliance, resilience and the human connections shaping global peacebuilding.

Miriam Mylvaganam is from the Hutt region in New Zealand and was endorsed as a Peace Fellow by District 9940. She attended the University of Bradford from September 2023 to December 2024, where she studied a Master’s in Peace, Conflict, and Development.

Miriam said her research is an evolving story, shaped by fieldwork in Uganda, discussions with colleagues and friends with lived experience, and insights from conferences like Human Development and Capability Association (HDCA) and the Refugee Law Initiative.

A point regarding the submission of images for the Bulletin and Website: Members are reminded that images have to meet a minimum size requirement, as has been specified for some time in the section at the bottom of this Bulletin. 820 pixels is the minimum size required with larger being better as this allows for cropping. The submission of images via MMS is NOT preferred as they are too small and of inferior quality. Email or Whatsapp is far superior.
