Board Motion Requiring Members' Approval

The following motion was moved on behalf of the International Committee and approved by the Club's Board at the Board Meeting held on Monday, September 7, 2026:

Motion

That the Club make a donation of $10,000 to Interplast. Interplast works across the Asia Pacific region to improve access to safe, timely, and appropriate surgical, medical, and rehabilitation services. Our programs focus on building local capacity through training, mentoring, and strengthening health systems so that communities can access care that transforms lives. More info HERE.

As this amount is $5,000 or more, it will require the approval of Club members. This motion will be put to members at the normal Club meeting to be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

Monday, 7th September 2026

Last Wednesday Ben Cowan was our Guest Speaker. He spoke about his passion for VWs and his work in the film industry doing special effects. This was particularly interesting for me as I saw The War Machine 2 nights earlier and was a movie that he worked on.
Thursday evening about 15 of our members went to Cilantro for a novelle cuisine dinner. As usual they were definitely up to scratch.
Jules Gaddie will be speaking on Wednesday morning. Jules has had a deep interest in the life and times of Muhammad Ali and has prepared a presentation that will fascinate and enlighten us. (thanks Linda).
Again there are no birthdays nor RCBMC anniversaries this week.
Tonight (Monday night) we have a Board meeting which I will report back to you all on Wednesday.

22 bookings for 26 stalls. 1 casual stall hired on the day. New gate set up a lot more manageable for helpers. Dog of the day award to 9 yr old grumpy jack russell named “Groucho Barks” looking resplendent in its own black puffer jacket.

The Nobel laureate challenges Rotary members to make their own daring leaps

In the fall of 2017, during her first weeks as a student at Oxford University, Malala Yousafzai snuck out of her dormitory in the middle of the night and climbed to the top of a campus bell tower, a feat that required eluding detection, teetering on rooftops and window ledges, and making death-defying leaps.

“People had been watching me my entire life, making sure I followed the rules, obeyed orders, stuck to the script,” Yousafzai explains in her latest memoir, Finding My Way. “Since arriving at college, I felt high on independence. Every choice, even the bad ones, belonged to me.”

A new lens on refugee self-reliance

Rotary Peace Fellow Miriam Mylvaganam’s journey across continents and crisis zones has become a powerful exploration of refugee self-reliance, resilience and the human connections shaping global peacebuilding.

Miriam Mylvaganam is from the Hutt region in New Zealand and was endorsed as a Peace Fellow by District 9940. She attended the University of Bradford from September 2023 to December 2024, where she studied a Master’s in Peace, Conflict, and Development.

Miriam said her research is an evolving story, shaped by fieldwork in Uganda, discussions with colleagues and friends with lived experience, and insights from conferences like Human Development and Capability Association (HDCA) and the Refugee Law Initiative.

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Neville reminded club members of Rotary's 4 way test.

He put out a call for nominations for the DIK (Donations in Kind), who are having their AGM soon, and seeking DIK members to fill board positions. BMC has membership status, and qualifies to nominate for the board.

The next BMC board meeting will be held on Monday 7 September at 7:30pm in Neville's office in Ormond.

Helen and Interplast

Member Helen Parker has been featured in the latest newsletter from Interplast. As members may recall Helen nominated Interplast as her charity when she ran the Melbourne Half Marathon in July, raising $2,660. This amount was raised from a wide range of people including friends, colleagues and fellow Rotarians. Here is what appeared in the newsletter:

Helen has been invited to join, at her own cost, an Interplast team heading for Samoa in late November this year. She received the invitation from Associate Professor Misha Coleman, the CEO of Interplast after it appears the person already earmarked to go had to withdraw. Misha will be attending our Club on the evening of Wednesday, September 30, 2023. Details and registration HERE.
Helen will be the third member of our Club to join one of these teams. She ticks a number of boxes to qualify.
She has a personal connection with Samoa, she has been identified as a personal supporter of Interplast, she is a member of a Rotary Club that has been a strong financial supporter of Interplast and. of course she is a doctor. Whilst it is somewhat unlikely she will be invited to actually perform surgery, I'm sure she will be put to good use in some capacity beyond just an observer.

As you may recall, Helen and I established a connection with the Rotary Club of Samoa in July. We will, of course, be in contact with them to see what we can do together in relation to this trip.

Well done Helen, and well done Rotary BMC!

A legacy beyond music

Dolly Parton’s legacy reaches far beyond the stage, with her lifelong generosity, love of literacy and enduring partnership with Rotary continuing to put books into the hands of children around the world.

Dolly Parton spent more than six decades proving that sass and substance were never mutually exclusive.

The world collectively mourned, when we heard that the beloved singer, songwriter, actor, businesswoman and philanthropist passed away on 25 August 2026, aged 80.

A point regarding the submission of images for the Bulletin and Website: Members are reminded that images have to meet a minimum size requirement, as has been specified for some time in the section at the bottom of this Bulletin. 820 pixels is the minimum size required with larger being better as this allows for cropping. The submission of images via MMS is NOT preferred as they are too small and of inferior quality. Email or Whatsapp is far superior.
