Edition 239
Monday, 3rd November 2025

Last week’s speaker was the Mayor of Glen Eira, Cr Simone Zmood, who gave a brief account of her own journey followed by an update on the City of Glen Eira. This included current programmes and future ones.
Last Friday’s drinks was at the Sandringham Side Bar in Sandringham. There was myself, Peter, Linda , Jo, Ian and Helen Parker. We were probably there for about two hours enjoying each others company and soaking up the local atmosphere. Why not join the group at the next one this Friday?
Recently there was a meeting of Rotary Community Leaders at which there was a presentation about social media. A PDF of the presentation has been prepared and sent to presidents within our community group. I think that this document is worth a look by anyone who may be considering creating promotion material for the club and not just social media. It is available HERE.
Cilantro is shut this week because of the Melbourne Cup, so for this Wednesday we will be meeting at Feast Cafe in Hampton. Bookings are absolutely essential and this includes the breakfast order.

Turning the tide on membership decline
Taken from Rotary Down Under HERE.

Faced with declining numbers, the Rotary Club of Belmont, WA, has turned the tide by embracing a whole-club approach to membership growth.

WORDS: Elizabeth Newton-Faas. Rotary Club of Belmont, WA.

I TOOK on the challenge of being president for the Rotary club of Belmont, WA, for 2024-25. When I joined the club six years ago there were 24 members and it gradually dropped to 17. One of my goals as president was to increase membership back to 24. I started with no membership director and no-one wanted the role. I introduced the concept that we are all responsible for membership.

I adopted a six-step plan to achieve my membership goals.

Interview with Past IP Ian Riseley

District Governor Peter Behm sits down with Past Rotary International President Ian Riseley for an honest and thought-provoking conversation about what truly drives Rotary — and how each of us can tap into that purpose to lead, serve, and make our corner of the world brighter. The interview is wide-ranging as only DG Peter can think up and covers some unexpected topics.

It is a long-form video that takes 35 minutes to watch — but it just might rekindle what first inspired you to become a Rotarian.

Polio eradication explained
Taken from RI website HERE
By Etelka Lehoczky

Do you have questions about Rotary’s pledge to end polio? We’ve got answers.

You’ve likely heard a lot about polio in recent weeks. Rotary members talk about it all year, but never more than in the month leading up to World Polio Day on 24 October. It’s one of the most important days of the year for Rotary — a time to reaffirm our nearly four-decade commitment to eliminating this disease from the world.
Polio eradication may seem complicated, but it’s actually fairly straightforward. If you’ve ever wondered about the science of the disease, the history of Rotary’s fight against it, or the progress of the global eradication effort, find the answers to those questions and more below.

Can Rotary remain the volunteer movement the world needs?
Taken from RDU HERE
Rotary’s future depends on bold transformation, as clubs across Zone 8 prove that purpose-driven action and flexible models are the key to survival and growth.
WORDS: Tony Heyward. Regional Council Deputy Chair.
Rotary has always been a powerful and well-respected force, delivering volunteer-driven service. But today, in Zone 8, it faces a stark choice: evolve or risk on becoming irrelevant. The heart of Rotary is its volunteers, but unless we change how we engage, support and grow that spirit, we are at risk of losing the very lifeblood of our organisation.

Call for articles
As Editor of the Bulletin and responsible for the Club's website I am asking members to please consider sending me any news about events they may have attended on behalf of the Club or any project that is being undertaken by the Club.
I am very happy to convert your news into a story which will then appear in the Bulletin, but, more importantly, appear on our Website.
This will show any people coming to our Website what our Club is involved in and the projects we support.
So, please take some photographs and put together some words - I will do the rest. Please send me your photos in the highest resolution possible via email or WhatsApp. I will do the cropping etc. Please DO NOT send pics via SMS  (MMS). These are next to useless.
Also, don't bother creating the article in Word or similar-just adds work. Just send the words and a few pics. I will do the rest.
Thank you.

Note from the Editor re Images and Events
A point regarding the submission of images for the Bulletin and Website: Members are reminded that images have to meet a minimum size requirement, as has been specified for some time in the section at the bottom of this Bulletin. 820 pixels is the minimum size required with larger being better as this allows for cropping. The submission of images via MMS is NOT preferred as they are too small and of inferior quality. Email or Whatsapp is far superior.
Would any member like to take responsibility for the updating of the Club's Event Calendar? I have created a page of instructions here so it is very easy to take over.
Thank you, Ian Ballantine
