Message from our President
“Serve to Change Lives”
Over the last two weeks the news focus has left Covid and been replaced by two major events being the unprecedented flooding in southern Queensland and Northern NSW and of course the situation in Ukraine and Russia.
In regards the flooding I cannot begin to understand how tragic and frustrating that wall of water and mud that has decimated so many homes must be and the effort now required for the clean-up and restart for so many people.
Below is a reprint of communication received from our district, DG, Dr. Daryl Moran –
Our club will respond to the Flood victim appeal, but perhaps members may also wish to donate from their private resources and for this reason I have copied this communication below.
RAWCS Appeal for Flood Victims in Queensland and Northern NSW
Another extreme weather event has brought an unprecedented disaster to this part of our country.
RAWCS has already established an appeal, the details of which I have posted on the D9810 website or you can follow this direct link. https://rawcs.org.au/
Please direct all donations from your clubs and other individuals to this appeal. My DG colleagues in the affected areas have mobilised their clubs in all sorts of ways. Some have manned relief centres, others are sausage sizzling for their communities, but some are unable to get many club members to help, because many of them are either marooned or have been directly affected by flood waters.
Ukraine
Did you know that there are 52 Rotary Clubs in Ukraine with just over 1000 members?
They are part of Section A of District 21 which includes Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Israel, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine.
The Rotary Club of Kyiv is the home club of John Hewko, Rotary International's CEO and General Secretary. You might be interested to read more about the history of Rotary in Ukraine at this Rotary website. http://rotaryeclubukraine.org/index.php/en/about-rotary/rotary-in-ukraine
Did you also know that there are 127 Rotary Clubs in the Russian Federation with just over 1200 members?
They are part of Section B of Zone 17 which includes the Aland Islands, Estonia, Finland and the Russian Federation.
A reminder the deadline to register for our district conference on 25th/26th March is end of this week = 10th March. Details here.
And especially don’t forget to come along on Friday 25th March, to the Marine Hotel for our club dinner 6pm, cost $55.00 per head – friends and extended family members are warmly invited to attend. There is no obligation to register for the conference to attend this club dinner. Details here.
The dinner will be the club meeting for this week, there will not be a breakfast meeting on the Wednesday prior.
“Lift the Lid Walk” for mental health – an event to raise awareness and funding for the St. Kilda Football club Danny Frawley centre in association with RC MASH (Mont Albert and Surry Hill Rotary club) and Australian Rotary Health is on March 20th, 8am start to 1pm.
Gather at Gardiners Creek Reserve, Holland Avenue Burwood.
$30 entry fee to complete either a 6km, 12km, or 18km walk and enjoy a football clinic hosted by St. Kilda Football club. – further details on our club website
I reckon it would be great for our club to support this event given our proximity to the Danny Frawley Centre. I certainly will be attending and looking for other club members who can join me on the morning walk.
Stay safe everyone.
Warm regards
President Helen Nodrum
Our guest speaker this week is Marcus Godinho, who will speak about Fareshare.

The Rotary Foundation creates channel for direct humanitarian support in Ukraine region - from the RI website here
In response to the deepening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, The Rotary Foundation has created an official channel for Rotary members around the world to contribute funds to support the relief efforts underway by Rotary districts and has designated its Disaster Response Fund as the main avenue for contributions.
The meeting was held at Cilantro. Grant Perry proposed the toast to President Srdjan Radonjic and members of the Rotary Club of Nis Centar in Serbia.Serbia is a land locked country in the Balkan peninsula. Serbia has an area of 77.5 km2 and a population of 8.7 million. Nis Centar is the third largest city in the country and has a population of 250000 people.
Thank you to Margaret Mason, Alan Kempton, Peter Nolan, Neville Kruss and Sheryl Zorella along with Ian Ballantine, Asia and Charles and myself who attended the Rotary storm Recovery Festival on Sunday last in Monbulk. A show of support for the clubs in our district was important. Huge organisational component to this day – congratulations to all concerned.
The brainchild for this fellowship evening was Linda O’Brien, beautifully supported by Margaret Mason. So many of our successful socials appear to have these two members in the foreground. In realisation of our community partnerships, the committee of Kings Park Tennis Club readily agreed to allow our club the use of its clubhouse which is well equipped to cater for most functions at no cost. More so to this the club president, George Leighfield attended as bar manager for the evening.
As a result of ongoing disease surveillance, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has confirmed a case of type 1 wild poliovirus (WPV1) in a child suffering from paralysis in Malawi. Analysis has shown the virus is genetically linked to WPV1 that had circulated in Pakistan’s Sindh province.
