CERTIFICATION OF APPRECIATION
On behalf of Past President Grant Perry, President Neville presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Kellie Carruthers for her club support and ongoing work in Community in the past Rotary year.
THANK YOU
A big thank you to Ian Ballantine for his assistance in setting up the AV at Gilberts during these past couple of weeks. This work is performed in the background with most club members unaware of what is carried out behind the scenes - so a huge thank you to Ian. It is much appreciated.
Another big thank you this time to Linda O'Brien for all her work in locating a new venue for our club's weekly meetings. Most members would not be aware of the amount of time and effort Linda has put in sourcing new premises and liaising with the venue's owners for our requirements, so that the change is smooth and appears almost seamless - not an easy task when the expectations are high after having been at Cilantro / Hemisphere for so many years. Well done Linda - we truly appreciate your efforts.
GUEST SPEAKER - Luke Meehan - High Performance Coach in AFL/AWFL
Club members and guests received a wonderful presentation from Luke Meehan who has been working in the AFL for 25 years. We learned that he has been involved in 4 different clubs during that time - Geelong, Footscray, Richmond and Essendon. He is presently working with the AWFL at Essendon - his first experience involving a female football team. Luke explained the role of a high performance coach is a relatively new role within the football fraternity. It looks at the medical fitness of players, sports science, medical science and rehabilitation. The work is highly technical involving the health and fitness of players captured via data metrics for later review and refinement of programs. Luke provided brief details of his background, having finished Uni in 2001 after obtaining a degree in Human Movement and Exercise Science. Working with Geelong was his first role in the AFL before moving onto other clubs to his now present position as high performance coach at Essendon AWFL Luke provided a rundown of which players he considered as best for athleticism, the strongest players, the best players overall, and in a humourous moment, the scariest player. No names being mentioned in this report - you had to be at the meeting to hear these.
A recent new venture is developing Sprout Strong - a health and fitness program designed for young people that looks at building physical confidence, mental resilience and lifelong healthy habits and good nutrition. A pilot program is currently in place, with plans to promote it through schools and junior sports clubs. It is in its infancy, and Luke is excited by the prospect of developing the program and broadening its reach. Luke finished his presentation answering a wave of questions coming from the floor. It was a terrific presentation - thank you Luke.
