President Neville had the pleasure of inducting our newest club member, Arto Arshakyan, who runs a music school in East Bentleigh. Arto was introduced to our club by Tim Lynch, our club membership chair. Our club offers a warm welcome to Arto, and his partner Luiza.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
President's Meeting - Neville attended his first district President's meeting that was held in person and over Zoom. Topics covered included District Enviro club awards, and District Excellence club awards. He will have more to say on these once our opportunities are explored. Rotoractors were also included, and Neville was very impressed by the maturity and passion they displayed for the programs they are involved in.
Birthdays and Anniversaries - Happy Anniversary to Barry Oliver for his 3 years in Rotary, and Nicky Chung for her first year at our club - though she joined Rotary in 2014 having transferred to our club last year.
GUEST SPEAKER - Debbie Welsh of Rostrum
Debbie was invited to speak to our club about Rostrum - a not-for-profit organisation that provides training and pathways for improving communication skills in public speaking, and developing leadership skills. Debbie provided the historical background of Rostrum, its purpose, who it is for and how people can become involved. We learned Rostrum commenced in the UK in 1923, and started in Australia in 1930. It was initially created for business men to assist with their communication skills in presentations and public speaking and how to become great communicators within the business world. Women were admitted in 1978. Programs and operations have evolved, with the main aim to help members build confidence in public speaking, meeting procedures, and leadership. It serves to be positive and supportive to raise members confidence whilst improving their skills. It attracts a wide range of people - such as people involved in boards, committees, meetings, interviewing, influencers, and facilitators to name a few. Members' ages range from 13 to 82. Currently there are 70 clubs in Australia with 800 members, and is open to anyone with an interest in improving their skills. A formal and structured training program is given to new members when they join, A more recent development has been to introduce an annual national public speaking competition open to secondary school students involving prepared and short-notice speeches. Debbie ended her presentation by taking and answering questions from club members. Thank you Debbie for your wonderful presentation.
