Message from our President

Great to see the market up and running again, we had a fabulous morning, great weather and plenty of customers who were very happy to have us back.
Discussions are underway with Holmesglen, via Greg, to determine when we might be able to consider a return to  Wednesday breakfast meetings, sufficient space will be the key.
I’ve had a call from DG Alma who is wanting to establish a district Rotoract Club, she is keen to have a couple of people from our club be involved in its establishment. If anyone is so inclined please let Neville know, it’s going to be discussed at tonight’s board meeting.
See you all Wednesday
All the best,
Geoff Gledhill
This week's meeting's speaker is Jenna Kruss - Social Worker - Anglicare Victoria on the subject of the Domestic social impact of Covid.
Please keep an eye on the Coming Events page of the website for a full list of meetings and events.

Long Walks in Lockdown
Like many  Melbournians Peter and I took to walking daily during the recent lockdown, wandering our local streets and parks, watching the progress or lack of progress on building sites, admiring gardens, plants and decor. One of our regular walk locations is to Landcox Park, this walk would sometimes take us past the now empty site that was W.T. Grants Building and Garden Supplies in Nepean Highway, Brighton East. W.T.Grants was a bit of a institution in the area being a family business of more than 100 years, but sadly closed their doors many years ago selling a large area of land at the rear of the Nepean Highway property but retaining the shop front and a number of other buildings facing Nepean Highway.

Major achievement focus of Rotary's World Polio Day event

by

Rotary’s 2020 World Polio Day Online Global Update program on 24 October hails this year’s historic achievement in polio eradication: Africa being declared free of the wild poliovirus.

Paralympic medalist and TV presenter Ade Adepitan, who co-hosts this year’s program, says that the eradication of polio in Africa was personal for him. “Since I was born in Nigeria, this achievement is close to my heart,” says Adepitan, a polio survivor who contracted the disease as a child. “I’ve been waiting for this day since I was young.”

Zoom Meeting November 4 2020 Pere Village Nepal
Here we were at 7:30 pm sitting very comfortably at home looking at each other through the magic of Zoom and amongst us were two visitors Richard Buhrer and Alex Zahnd, our two guest speakers meeting with us in Switzerland. It would have been 5:30 am and as they said while were in the dark in the evening, it was still dark in the morning. As was mentioned the magic of Zoom! Kevin D hosted the meeting and while welcomed our special guests, he also welcomed President Ian Kirkwood and   PP wife, Faye, Dora, Sophie and PP Merv from the Rotary Club of Caulfield. President Geoff also welcomed us all and thanked Richard and Alex for their time. He announced how pleased he was for the lifting of restrictions so we can be starting the market on Sunday. He reminded us that plans for familiarization of the market rules will start on Saturday. He reminded us that will be doing somethings that we have not done before but we need to make sure we are following COVID rules, and more than likely we are better to err on the side of caution.

Rotex fills the gap after Rotary Youth Exchange
After returning home, many students miss their lives abroad. Rotex helps keep the international connections going
by Diana Schoberg Illustration by Viktor Miller Gausa from rotary.org website
Riikka Muje had a fantastic time when she lived in Brittany, France, in 2011-12 as a Rotary Youth Exchange student. “At the beginning it was hard,” she recalls. “I didn’t speak the language. I didn’t know anyone. But then it’s amazing how you can form a life in another place.”

Zoom Meeting October 28 2020 Jane Tewson
There was an air of a little bit of light heartedness and hope as we enter into a new phase of life in Victoria. The shops and beauty, hairdressing and more freedom to all of us is happening or about to happen. There is positive talk about the market re-opening and there is talk of mini-meetings face-to-face. WOW! Well done us. This was re-iterated by Pres. Geoff as he addressed us on his way to the country. We have more scope with what we can and cannot do. He continued by reminding us to follow all the rules and be observant of the guide lines and look at more positive ways of moving forward.
