At the Club's recent Changeover evening a number of members were awarded Paul Harris Fellows in recognition of their service to the Club and Rotary International. For newer members, here is an explanation, (same as that given on Saturday evening).
A PAUL HARRIS FELLOW is a RECOGNITION that was introduced in 1957 in honour of Paul Harris who founded Rotary in 1905.
It was established to express appreciation for a contribution to the humanitarian and educational programs of the Rotary Foundation.
A Paul Harris can be awarded to either an individual who contributes a sum equivalent to $1,000 US dollars to The Rotary Foundation, or to an individual a Club wishes to have recognised.
A Club earns the right to these PHF’s through its own contributions to The Rotary Foundation.
In the latter case, this person can be a member, or non-member of Rotary who a Club wishes to have recognised for their service.
Every Rotarian should strive to be a Paul Harris Fellow because for each PHF named, we know that US$1000 has been given to The Rotary Foundation.
Similarly, for each sapphire or ruby added to a Rotarian’s PHF pin, an additional US$1000 has been given to The Rotary Foundation.
We should celebrate each of these milestones for what they represent. That is, a gift to The Rotary Foundation and an opportunity to do even more good in the world through the Foundation.
