GUEST SPEAKER - David Bartlett of Safer Places Network
David is a former Victoria Police Detective and former member of the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission with over 15 years of experience in law enforcement who saw the need for improved methods for gathering information around crime related events.  He commenced by providing information on his background where he claims to be a 'self taught nerd' building  websites whilst still at school, followed by commencing a business with his brother to build websites after completing uni at Swinburne.  After a few years, and when this did not prove to be challenging enough, and following a chance visit with a police officer based in Kew, David joined Victoria Police in 2005 - commencing in uniform for 3 years, before being joining the Drug Unit in 2008 where he learnt surveillance techniques.  In 2010, he became a detective in the State Intelligence Division and then posted to the Australian Crime Commission in 2012 where he worked for 7 years in areas of organised crime and environmental terrorism at a high level providing accounts of some of the work entailed. David became aware of the importance of surveillance capabilities when footage captured by surveillance cameras became an integral component for solving the murder of Jill Meagher, the ABC journalist in 2012.  David left the Crime Commission for family reasons to work in a family business which he has done for the past 5 years.  Earlier this year, he returned to the world of surveillance and commenced a business Safer Places Network that encourages businesses and people with home surveillance systems to register their systems.  David explained some of the current activities employed by police for gathering crime related details and its complexities, and outlined the benefits for having a unified registration system as a resource to identify and collate information together more quickly, adding that surveillance cameras are critical for identifying evidence. David presented a series of slides that explains how Safer Places Network operates and a map showing the expansion of how quickly registration of surveillance equipment and its location is being taken up. The vision is to create partners with related organisations for the solving and prevention of crime and currently partners with Neighbourhood Watch.  David advises 21 million surveillance cameras have been built - having them registered on a unified platform creates a powerful tool for helping to solve crime.  More information is available on his company's website - https://www.saferplaces.com.au/index.php    Thank you David for your most interesting presentation that had everyone thoroughly engaged.
