* Neville recognised an 8 year Rotary anniversary for Marg Lucas and passed on Special Happy Birthday wishes to Tim Lynch.
* 19-20th July commemorates the 110th anniversary of the Battle of Fromelles in France during WW1 - the worst day of fighting ever experienced by Australian troops during any war with the loss or maiming of approximately 5000 troops in one day. Neville wished to pay tribute to the fallen, and recited the "Anzac Ode' - lest we forget.
* Neville displayed a copy of the Rotary 4 Way Test which he has framed and will be on display at all Rotary club meetings. Also included are Rotary acronyms, of which there are many, for knowledge base reference - very handy for new members (and not so new!)

* Trip to West Samoa - Helen Parker and Ian Ballantine
Helen and Ian very recently returned from a trip to West Samoa where Helen caught up with distant relatives (Helen is 1/8th Samoan on her mothers side), and whilst there, also donated an artificial arm picked up from DIK - Donations in Kind, that will be used for training purposes at the local hospital. So rewarding to be able to provide much useful and needed equipment. Great work Helen and Ian.
GUEST SPEAKER - Club member Jim Magee - Walking the Camino Trail
Jim treated club members to a wonderful presentation of his and his wife - Claire's recent walk across northern Spain on the famous walk officially called the St James Walk, but is more well known as the Pilgrim's Camino trail. There are many Camino trails coming from lots of directions, but St James Walk is 'the one' that most people speak of when mentioning the Camino trail. The walk commenced in Saint Jean Pied de Port on the eastern side of northern Spain close to the Mediterranean coast, and after having walked across the Pyrenees and the plains of northern Spain, and 1019 kilometres and 46 days later, they officially finished at Santiago de Compostela - though Jim and Claire chose to walk a few extra kilometres to arrive at Finisterra on the Atlantic coast three days later. Jim described the walk, the terrain and conditions and people they met. Choosing to do the scenic walk which is a bit longer - it was often challenging walking up and down mountains and hills, across many plains that also have hills. Weather could change quickly - but they were always well prepared. The trail is well signposted, with little chance of getting lost. Pilgrims have walked the Camino trail for more than a 1000 years. Evidence of the Roman Empire was everywhere, where many of the roads travelled and bridges crossed were Roman. More than 1000 people walk the Camino trail annually - of all ages from young to old (the oldest in their 80's) and from all walks of life - religious, non religious, professional, non professional, everyday people, some disabled, however all with a reason for doing the walk. Not everyone does the entire walk - up to 70% of pilgrims only walk the last 100km - the minimum required to be recognised as having walked the Camino trail and be issued with a Pilgrims Certificate. The more dedicated walking longer distances have a 'Camino' passport stamped at all the official towns along the Camino trail and the only way to have the passport stamped is to be at the location of the town. Jim spoke of the people, their warmth and generosity, and that the walk for everyone, including sole walkers, is very safe. There is even a special police patrol, to ensure the safety of everyone. Jim dedicated his walk to raise funds for MAACA - Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association that has clubs across the state, enabling people of all abilities and of all ages and sexes to participate in cricket. It is a life force for many who would normally not be able to participate in a sport. Jim raised in excess of $7,000, thus enabling two more teams to participate in cricket.
Jim finished by mentioning he and Claire are planning another pilgrims walk to Rome next year, and that they are already in training. Thank you Jim for your wonderful presentation.
